Applying for SMART Scotland grants
SMART Scotland grants support feasibility studies into high-risk research and development projects. This fund is exclusively available to small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs) based, or planning to set up, in Scotland.
For Scottish Enterprise grants, SMEs are categorised as:
- Small business: under 50 employees and either under €10m turnover or under €10m total on the balance sheet
- Medium business: under 250 employees and either under €50m turnover or under €43m total on the balance sheet.
Consilium’s team of Corporate Finance experts work with owner-managed businesses to apply for and secure SMART Scotland grants. Our Grants Advisory service provides everything SMEs need to complete the grant application process.
Criteria for SMART Scotland grants
Projects applying for SMART Scotland grants must demonstrate an advancement in technological innovation for their UK industry or sector. It is expected that projects will include technical challenges or risks associated with developing the technology and the business will possess, or can obtain, the technical expertise and resources to complete the project.
SMART Scotland grants are available for up to 70% of eligible costs in the case of a small business, and 60% for a medium-sized business. Studies typically last between six and 18 months and the maximum grant available is £100,000.
