Consilium Q&A: Beth Goodwin, Scotland netballer

As the 2022 Commonwealth Games continue in Birmingham, we caught up with our colleague, CA trainee and netballer Beth Goodwin for a chat about what it’s like representing Scotland at the Games.

The Birmingham 2022 opening ceremony was spectacular; how was it for you and your Scotland teammates?

Beth: It was an amazing feeling; everyone walking out together with the flag bearers leading the way. It’s a proud moment knowing you’re representing Scotland!

It’s been a bruising opening two netball matches for Scotland. What positives are you taking from them?

Beth: The first match against the world number ones (Australia) was always going to be tough and we focussed on putting out a performance we were happy with, regardless of the outcome. I believe we did that. In game two we had a great comeback against Wales and just missed out on the win. We’ll be looking to keep that intent for the games to come.

What is the atmosphere like in the Games village?

Beth: It’s a great atmosphere in the village; it’s really busy with athletes and management. Everyone in team Scotland is so supportive and rooting for one another.

The Birmingham crowds have been getting behind the home nations. Does it almost feel like a home Games for the Scottish Thistles?

Beth: It does feel like a home Games. We have a lot of supporters who travelled down to watch and we feel the support on the court from the crowd.

Isn’t netball supposed to be a non-contact sport?!

Beth: It’s supposedly “non-contact” but it isn’t! Netball is a very physical game and there’s a lot of contesting during matches.

Your Consilium colleagues are going to be cheering you and Scotland on in the office this week. Does that give you a wee boost?

Beth: It is so nice knowing they’re cheering me on. It’s a confidence boost!
